Training the Next Generation of Researchers

The OWIN6G Doctoral Network brings together ten doctoral candidates (DCs) and academic and industrial partners across Europe to develop expertise in optical and wireless sensor networks for future 6G applications.

The training programme combines individual doctoral research with specialised technical education, transferable skills development, international collaboration and experience in both academic and industrial environments.

A Comprehensive Training Programme

OWIN6G provides a structured training programme designed to support the scientific and professional development of its doctoral candidates.

The programme combines local training at host institutions, network-wide training activities, research secondments, transferable skills development and individual career planning. This approach enables doctoral candidates to gain specialist knowledge while developing the broader skills needed for careers in research and innovation.

Training Schools and Workshops

Network-wide training is an important part of OWIN6G. The programme includes specialised training schools, scientific workshops, tutorials and presentations delivered by academic and industrial experts.

Training topics include photonics, optical and wireless communication, sensor networks, Internet of Things technologies and the design and optimisation of future 6G networks.

These activities also provide opportunities for doctoral candidates to exchange knowledge, present their research and collaborate with researchers from other institutions.

Research Secondments

International and intersectoral research secondments are an integral part of the OWIN6G training programme.

During these placements, doctoral candidates have the opportunity to work with partner institutions, gain experience with different research methods and facilities, and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.

Secondments are designed to complement each candidate’s individual research project and support the development of practical, interdisciplinary skills.

Transferable Skills and Career Development

Beyond technical expertise, OWIN6G emphasises the professional skills needed for successful careers in academia, industry and innovation.

The training programme addresses scientific communication, research dissemination, scientific writing, intellectual property, entrepreneurship and innovation-related skills.

Individual career development planning helps doctoral candidates identify their professional goals, training needs and future career opportunities.

Individual Research and Supervision

Each doctoral candidate works on an individual research project within the wider scientific objectives of OWIN6G.

Their research is supported by supervision, collaboration within research groups and interaction with other doctoral candidates across the network. This combination of individual and collaborative work helps connect specialised research topics with broader challenges in optical and wireless sensor networks.
