Meet Our Researchers: Yiming Shen

Meet Yiming Shen, one of the doctoral researchers involved in the EU-funded OWIN6G project. Yiming is currently pursuing his PhD at Technological University Dublin, Ireland, where his research focuses on optical fibre sensing, resonator fabrication, and force sensing.

Yiming holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Shandong Normal University and a master’s degree in Physics from Shandong University, China.

Advancing Optical Fibre Sensing

As part of OWIN6G, Yiming is working on the Development of a Distributed Optical Sensor System. His research has led to several significant achievements, including the development of a glass-supported whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microbubble resonator force sensor with a sensitivity of 125.71 pm/mN.

He is also developing a two-dimensional force sensor based on two cascaded WGM microbubble resonators, collaborating with fellow OWIN6G doctoral candidate Satish Kumar Modalavalasa from Czech Technical University in Prague.

Another area of his research involves refractive index sensing using a programmed interrogator, enabling real-time spectral waterfall visualisation in collaboration with Raul Zamorano-Illanes at Northumbria University, UK.

Research Impact and Collaboration

Yiming’s work has already contributed to two journal papers published in the Journal of Lightwave Technology and three conference papers presented at OFS-29, SoftCOM, and Photonics Ireland 2025.

Through his research and collaborations within the OWIN6G network, Yiming is helping advance optical sensing technologies with potential applications in next-generation communication and sensing systems.
